Law School Application Costs: What to Expect and How to Plan

When I was preparing to apply to law school, I was lucky to participate in a program that not only helped me navigate the admissions process but also covered the cost of an LSAT prep course. I qualified for fee waivers, which helped with application costs, but I severely underestimated the true cost of being part of the law school admissions pool. And I definitely didn’t plan ahead to cover these expenses.

Fast forward more than a decade later, and the financial burden of applying to law school has only increased. Fees are higher, diversity programs that once helped underrepresented students gain access to legal education are under attack, and many aspiring law students—especially those from low-income, first-generation, or noncitizen backgrounds—are left wondering how they’ll afford the cost of simply applying to law school, let alone attending.

I talk to students all the time about their dreams of becoming lawyers. And in those conversations, I often find myself repeating the same advice: you need a financial plan for your legal education before you even apply. That’s why I created a new workbook (in a series of financial planning workbooks you can find here): Financial Planning for Future Lawyers: Law School Application Costs.

Why You Need a Financial Plan for Law School Applications

Before you ever step foot in a law school classroom, the costs start adding up:

  • LSAT registration fees
  • LSAT prep courses and tutoring
  • Credential Assembly Service (CAS) subscription and reports
  • Application fees per school
  • Travel costs for interviews or admitted student events

It’s easy to overlook these expenses, but when you add them up, they can easily exceed $3,000-$5,000, depending on how many schools you apply to and how much you invest in LSAT prep.

I didn’t realize this when I applied and am seeing students I mentor go through this process.  Still, I continue to see so many students making the same mistake today. That’s why I created this workbook—to help you plan ahead, budget effectively, and find ways to save.
