When I was about 13 years old, I decided I wanted to become a lawyer. I didn’t know any lawyers personally and had no idea how to embark on this journey. My early understanding of the legal field came from flipping through the Yellow Pages (which, back then, was like today’s Google searches) and cold-calling law offices. I quickly realized that access to legal help was a privilege only for those who could afford it. This disparity struck me deeply. It was clear to me that the legal system in our country was unfair. If you had money, you could access justice. Without it, you faced the system’s often harsh consequences. This realization sparked a passion within me to fight against injustices and advocate for those who couldn’t afford legal representation, like my own family.
Fast forward to college, my passion for social justice and community organizing grew stronger. I had a brilliant mentor, a lawyer who returned to community organizing, who taught me the power of organizing and activism. I initially believed that I didn’t need to become a lawyer to make a difference. However, life had other plans. I found myself volunteering at a non-profit legal organization in Los Angeles, doing policy research and analysis. The lawyers there were different from what I had previously experienced. They were compassionate and committed to justice. One of them encouraged me to consider law school and suggested that I apply to the UCLA Law Fellows Program.
Skeptical but open-minded, I applied and was accepted into the program. I approached the experience with the intent to see if law school and a legal career were right for me. The turning point came during a panel discussion with public interest lawyers. At that moment, I realized that becoming a lawyer aligned with my passion for social justice. The UCLA Law Fellows Program helped me confirm that I wanted to become a civil rights litigator. For this, I am deeply grateful.
Reflecting on my journey, I understand the importance of finding the right support and guidance. If you’re considering law school, I hope you, too, find a community that nurtures your aspirations. Pre-law fellowship programs are an excellent way to explore the legal field and gain valuable experience. These programs can expose you to the law school application process and various career paths in law, helping you make an informed decision about your future.
Why You Should Consider Pre-Law Fellowship Programs
Every pre-law program is different and can offer a different combination of learning experiences. Here are a few of the reasons why you should consider applying for and, if selected, participating in a pre-law fellowship program:
- Gain Exposure to the Legal Field: These programs offer firsthand experience in various legal settings, allowing you to see what a career in law could look like. Whether you’re interested in public interest law, corporate law, or another legal field, fellowships can provide valuable insights.
- Receive Guidance and Mentorship: Many fellowships pair you with law students or experienced lawyers who can offer advice, answer your questions, and help you navigate your career path. Mentors can provide invaluable support and insights based on their own experiences.
- Build Your Professional Network: Fellowships often include networking opportunities with legal professionals, which can lead to internships, job offers, and valuable connections. If you are a first generation college student/grad, these networking opportunities are invaluable!
- Develop Essential Skills: Some pre-law programs help you build important skills like legal research, writing, and critical thinking, which are crucial for law school and your future career.
- Clarify Your Career Goals: By participating in a pre-law fellowship, you can explore different areas of law and determine what aligns with your interests and values. This can help you make a more informed decision about pursuing a legal career.
- Get Insight into the Law School Application Process: Many programs offer workshops and resources to help you navigate the application process, from preparing for the LSAT to writing compelling personal statements.
Exploring Pre-Law Fellowship Programs
